Downie Fish Diary:

Another Sunny Day in Whitehills - 7th May 2008

What a beautiful day here in Whitehills with blue sky's and flat calm sea. Not too much fish in the markets but some haddock from Peterhead to keep the factory going. Plenty of other bits 'n' pieces for the troops to be done so we will not have a chance to enjoy the sun today. Golfing tonight in a competition so fingers crossed as I am playing with Alan Downie's sister!! Speak to you later. Alan Stewart, Factory Manager.

What's happened to the Fish!! - 2nd May 2008

So much for my prediction of their being plenty of fish in the markets today. Only 16 boxes from Fraserburgh Market with 2 bins from Kinlochbervie. The fish from Fraserburgh is mostly for the shop with the 2 bins for factory production. Some wonderfull halibut and lemon sole. The forecast is not looking too good for the weekend but I hope you all enjoy the long weekend. The shop & factory will be open as usual on Monday so I look forward to seeing you then. Speak to you later. Alan Stewart, Factory Manager.

No Fish in the Markets but Fish From Boat - 1st May 2008

At last we have fish from the Russa Taign to keep the factory busy with the possibility of fish in the markets on Friday. Interest from a number of new restaurants for some of our fish products so the word must be out about our quality of goods. Speak to you later. Alan Stewart, Factory Manager.

Downies of Whitehills - a Family Business
Owned within family for 120+ years. - Managing Partner, Alan Downie has been involved in the business since he left school having spent a short time aboard a local fishing boat. On joining the business, Alan worked his way through the processing areas in order to have a full understanding of the business. His wealth of experience has given Downies an enviable reputation for supplying only the finest quality fresh fish products meeting the needs of our many customers worldwide. Mrs. Helen Downie, Alan’s mother, is still actively involved in the business dealing with the accounts department.
Situated on the sea-front in Whitehills overlooking the Moray Firth on the North East Coast of Scotland, conveniently placed for access to the major fishing ports in the North East of Scotland. Processing locally caught fresh fish, processed daily from local fish markets. Downies have been based in Whitehills since the company started back in the 1870s - fresh fish landed in Whitehills in years gone by, were processed and sent to Fish Markets in Glasgow, Liverpool & Manchester on a daily basis.

Ongoing Improvement & Investment
One secret of Downies' success is their constant drive for improvement to all areas of their business. This encompasses all aspects of the business from new product development as well as ongoing investment in premises, machinery and staff. To enhance our range of quality fresh and smoked fish products, they now supply an innovative range of seafood pastry products. Some of these products were entered into the Grampian Food Awards in recent years achieving 1st place in numerous categories.
The most recent expansion to the premises was the completion of a 300 pallet capacity cold store with its own direct link to production. Modern office facilities were completed incorporating the partners’ office, accounts department, quality control department and reception area. Our retail shop, which adjoins the factory, was recently extended to allow our customers to view our ever expanding range of fresh and smoked fish.
To meet the ever increasing demand for our award winning pies & pastries our on-site bakery has been extended. Staff training is an important factor in the success of Downies. With the required trained staff in place, this allows us to maintain the rigorous quality control checks required by our ever-growing customer base.
